While video production is slowly catching up, a useful tip here and there will not do much harm to enhance effects and have a short synopsis of the problems and how to deal with them. Any footage that we work on needs to look interesting and appealing enough, whether its for commercial or non- commercial use. Here are a few quick tips to win the cake when it comes to video production. We are aware of most of the dos and dont's. However a quick brush up of the simple and effective techniques will help in a better understanding of doing video production better.
The first trick is to be close to the object generally called the subject. Although there is an option to zoom the object whenever required, however to photograph from a closer proximity always makes a difference. The result is a more better outline and clearer sounds. For example a telephoto shoot is more at risk to produce blurred images and focusing in such a case becomes very difficult as the background goes out of focus. The microphone attached will also record sounds from the background as well and mostly from the front. This would make it difficult to edit during the post production stage. Any sound which is the closest to the microphone is heard the loudest. So we need to ensure that we capture the video from the least distance from the main object.
Also while a video production involves a film shoot it should be in multiple scenes as this provides many perspectives to the same idea and subject. There are instances when a planned and short shoot looks more made up than lengthy footage which looks more natural. Also shooting more than just the subject of the coverage adds other elements to the visual thereby reducing the boredom of viewing the same image for a longer period of time. However the background around the subject should be as neutral as possible , so as not to attract or divert the attention from the primary scene. Otherwise it will become very confusing.
You can also add a dramatic effect to the shot by placing the camera in various heights. In this way video production gets a more natural look as it feels like somebody is filming from a different altitude and a third perspective occupies the viewers mind. Also the microphone which is used during a outdoor shoot should be external. This reduces the adjacent sounds from the camera and lets the microphone capture natural sounds which are meant to surround the subject. Video production gets interrupted with sounds from the click of the camera or zooming in and out of the lens thereby spoiling the whole effect. You can in fact use a shock mount or a wind filter to prevent the infiltration of noise into the main sound.
Light is a major factor in video production. Light should be put to the best use and sometimes works miracles on a very boring subject. Other than times when light cannot be controlled as in outdoor shoots, lights should always be controlled so that they can mixed for any required special effect. A tripod is always handy to take a steady shot and also when important details need to be captured. Finally a very thorough editing is called for. Any useless unnecessary or not so impressive shots should be deleted without a second thought unless there is absolutely no scope of doing a retake.
